I'm in my late 30s and I remember reading this at the library when i was in early grade school. I loved it then and still do. And, no joke, the stories about the hitchhiker and the scarf girl have been permanently stuck in my head since then.Over the years, I couldn't remember the name of this book so I've never been able to buy it. That is until Buzzfeed randomly did an article about it back in March or April. I was so hyped I ordered this almost immediately.
The green ribbon story is messing with my four year old. It scared her, pretty much the red ribbon folk story of taking the ribbon off and her head falls off. Good intro to scary stories to test the water to see if your child is ready for it. Bad idea to read right before bedtime (she slept in my bed that night) but she loves it. This book is a good intro to the child exploring the thrill of being scared and telling scary stories at the campfire. Start here and move slowly up to scary movies.
Another favorite from when I was a kid. I was so happy to be able to find this book still in print. I still remember going to the library when I was in grade school and taking this book out. I loved it then and still like it now even though it is more for kids. Brings back fond childhood memories of telling scary stories at sleepovers with friends. So excited I was able to find it.my favorite story in it was of the girl with the ribbon around her neck. That one always stuck in my head.
Our son has been begging for this book for years. I read reviews that it may give some children nightmares so I was hesitant. It turns out, our son read it at his school library behind my back prior to this purchase. He is a huge fan of scary stories and me forbidding this one made him want it even more I suppose. I remember these stories from when I was younger as well. They definitely seem like from a different era. Depending on the age of your child and their personality, they would probably enjoy it as much as my son. I made him wait until he was 8, but as I said, I think he read it at 6-7 without me knowing.
This is a book I used to check out frequently from the elementary school library well over 20 years ago. I could always remember two stories and artwork, to this day, from this book. However, until I almost randomly found it on Amazon, I thought I would never see this book again. Fantastic book with great stories for children and for an adult who could never forget staying up late as a child scared, but couldn't stop reading this great book.
I remembered this book from when I was a child and recently bought it for my nieces and nephews (ages 5-8) to read during the Halloween season. (They are just starting to get into telling ghost stories.) They LOVED it and looked for it every time they came over. The stories were spooky enough to capture their attention and imaginations but not too scary. I think they'll enjoy it for years to come!
These stories are actually pretty "dark" - so of course the kids LOVE this book! It's not too scary - just enough to be fun. The pictures are perfectly gloomy and mysterious, yet not real enough to be truly upsetting. Of course there are some children who you wouldn't want to read this to, but all of ours, and the grand children now, ask to have it read to them. It's usually the first one they choose from the book basket.
It is difficult to find scary Halloween books that are successfully written for the primary grades. I have a shelf of suitably scary books for grades three and up but, telling a story that is just scary enough, but not to scary for grades Pre-K- 2 is a challenge. This book succeeds beautifully.
